MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION

An object or a particle is said to be in the state of rest when it does not change its position with time w.r.t its surroundings.
Depending upon the position of observer, the state of rest of a particle is of two types
     - Absolute state of rest.
     - Relative state of rest.
An object or a particle is said to be in the state of motion when it changes its position with time w.r.t its surroundings.

LINEAR MOTION -The motion of an object can be linear or curvilinear , circular or in a  plane or in a space. Linear motion is that motion in which a particle moves along a straight line with respect to a point of reference. A body is said to be in linear motion if every constituent particle of the body move along parallel straight line and covers same distance in the given time. If a force is acting on a body and body moves in the direction of force applied, then the motion of body is called linear motion.

MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION - It is that motion in which a particle moves in one particular direction with respect to points of reference. It is that motion of particle body in which only one out of the three coordinates specifying the position of the body changes with respect to time. In such a motion, the particle or a body moves along a straight line or a well defined path. therefore, on dimensional motion is sometimes known as rectilinear or linear motion.

DISTANCE - Length is defined as the actual path traversed by body during motion in a given interval of time. Distance is a scalar quantity. The SI unit of distance is metre and cgs unit is cm. The value of distance traveled by a moving body can never be zero or negative.

DISPLACEMENT - Displacement of a body in a given time is defined as a change in the position of the body in a particular direction during that time. Displacement is a vector quantity as it possesses both magnitude and direction. Displacement of a body in a given time is represented by a vector drawn from the initial position to its final position. The unit of displacement is that of length. The value of displacement can be positive, zero or negative. the value of displacement can never be greater than the distance traveled. When a moving body returns to its starting point, then its effective displacement is zero.

SPEED - The speed of a particle or a body is defined as the distance traveled b it in a unit time. Speed is a scalar quantity. the speed of a body can be zero or positive but never negative. It will increase or decrease with time. The cgs unit of speed is cm/s and SI unit is m/s. If speed is zero, the body is in rest. A body is said to be moving with a uniform speed, if it covers equal intervals of time, how so ever small these intervals may be.When a body is moving with a variable speed, then the speed of the body at a given instant of time is known as its instantaneous speed.

VELOCITY - The velocity of a particle is defined as the distance covered by a particle in a particular direction with respect to the point of reference. It is a vector quantity. It can be zero, negative or positive. It can be equal to speed only if the body is moving along a straight line in the same direction. Velocity can never be greater than speed. A body is said to be moving with a uniform velocity, if it undergoes equal displacements in equal intervals of time, how so ever small these intervals may be. A body is said to be moving with a variable velocity if it covers equal displacements in unequal intervals of time or unequal displacements in equal intervals of time or changes direction while moving with a constant speed.

ACCELERATION - The acceleration of a particle is defined as the time rate of change of velocity. It is the change in velocity in a unit time. It is a vector quantity. It can be positive, negative or zero. It is positive if the velocity of the body is increasing with time and is negative if the velocity of body in decreasing with time. The negative acceleration is known as retardation. A body is said to be moving with a uniform acceleration if its velocity changes by equal amounts in equal intervals of time. If a body is moving with a variable acceleration, the the acceleration, then the acceleration of a body at the given instant of time is called instantaneous acceleration.

RELATIVE VELOCITY - The relative velocity of one body w.r.t another body is the velocity with which one body moves w.r.t another body. It is also defined as the time rate of change of relative positive of one object with respect to another.
